About the Project

Hawaii imports more than 80% of what we eat. That keeps our cost of living high, our options limited and creates problems for the environment. Now, the pandemic is exposing critical issues that come when we can’t feed our own population in a time of great need.

In 2021, Civil Beat is taking a hard look at why Hawaii imports so much of its food — and what it would take for us to grow and process more of our food here.
